Issue:

Microsoft Vista has several services that run that have security repercussions, cause your computer to slow and increase network traffic.  It is recommended to disable these services unless you have a mission critical need for them.

Resolution:

  • SSDP Discovery - Most users can safely disable this service.  It will noticeably increase your wireless initial connection time.
  • ReadyBoost - You can free up some memory by disabling this service.  If you plan to use removable storage as memory, do not disable this service.
  • Remote Registry - Unless you have remote users that need to modify your local registry, disable this service.  This service is useful in corporations so that IT departments can make changes without physically touching each computer.  Home users and small businesses are generally not using this service and should disable it to increase the security of the machine.
  • Windows Defender - Microsoft's spyware / adware removal solution.  Disable this service and use Lavasoft Ad-Aware instead.  From experience, Windows Defender does not do the job.
  • Security Center - You can free up some memory by disabling this service. System tray notifications about virus protection and other security issues will not be notified to the user.
